Apalachicola Marlin” SOLD / Commission ~ (new custom versions available with unique color, size, and finish options).

This handmade wood art is called “Apalachicola Marlin!” The beautiful big boy was created for a client from reclaimed wood (as well as new stock) taken out of a boathouse near Apalachicola, Florida (hence the name). Vintage and modern all at the same time with a classic beautiful, tropical, and timeless feel. Custom crafted on the beautiful Emerald Coast of Florida.

The piece in the pictures is the original (for reference) but I am now taking custom orders to re-create this work. You can either have the same coloring and size, or variations on both. Please send me an email and let’s talk about your options and ideas. Click any image to view it larger.

By design on this original, the wood was in rough shape and ultimately, the owner wanted to embrace the imperfections and actually play them up by using a semi-gloss sealer and then a finishing wax to make him completely water-like smooth. Plus I used an aged, vintage aqua, backing board to add to the effect. I would typically finish this piece with a solid color stain and a satin sheen but if you want a similar look as this high-gloss reclaimed version, we can absolutely make that happen.

Let me tell you a little about my process… Each piece is custom designed and built in my coastal studio. It starts with a small scale sketch and then, once I am happy with the design, I draw the design in full/life-size scale on cardboard. Those designs pieces (as you see them in the finished work) are then cut out individually and the design is transferred to the wood.

The wood is specifically chosen with grain patterns that match and enhance the design. Each piece is then milled and planed for smoothness and then cut, sanded, and finished by me. All hand-done… no computer aid, no laser cuts, no mass production copies. Each individual piece of wood is then finished with the chosen colors, stains, topcoat, etc.

After that, the piece is meticulously assembled, very much like a puzzle, onto the backing board using wood glue and small finishing nails (attached from the back so they are not seen) if necessary. After that, any touch ups that might be needed are done and then I apply three coats of protective polyurethane. When the poly cures, a topcoat of finishing wax is applied and buffed to a satin sheen. Very much like the waxing process that goes on a surfboard. It truly gives the finished piece a classic coastal feel and vibe!

From start to finish each one of my pieces usually takes about a week to complete and will typical ship out to you (depending on the current number of orders in my queue) within 14 days. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so nothing leaves my shop until it is absolutely gorgeous. If I wouldn’t be proud to hang it on my own wall then it does not go out the door!

Almost all of my pieces can be custom done in different sizes and with different finishes so If you’ve got an idea in mind, reach out to me and let’s talk. I’m sure I can make it happen! Just remember, with every piece being hand crafted and one-of-a-kind, there will be variations in the finished product. They will be similar to photos but no two handmade pieces of art are ever exactly the same. But that’s the beauty of it, you’re getting a unique piece that is truly your own and nobody else will have the same one!

Thanks for looking at my art, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and I am absolutely positive you will love your purchase. If for some reason you are not happy, we will work together until we make it right. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns that you might have. Thanks again!
